March 2013 is CGFM Month

The West Michigan Chapter of the Association of Government Accountants is asking the cities and counties in our service area to issue a proclamation designating March 2013 as “Certified Government Financial Manager” month in West Michigan.

The Certified Government Financial Manager (CGFM) certification is awarded by the Association of Government Accountants (AGA), a national professional association of 16,000 members who represent every level of government financial management.  Since 1950, AGA has been dedicated to serving those who are faced with the challenge of using every government resource in the most effective manner possible and has been the vanguard organization addressing the issues and challenges facing government financial managers.

AGA's CGFM Program was specifically designed to help meet the critical need for greatly increased emphasis on the professional qualifications and stature of government financial managers.  This professional designation was created to recognize the unique skills and special knowledge required of professionals who specialize in government financial management.  CGFM candidates must hold at least a bachelor’s degree with 24 credit hours in financial management or related topics.  In addition to passing three stringent examinations and meeting an experience requirement of professional-level work in government financial management, those awarded the designation agree to abide by AGA's strict Code of Ethics and complete at least 80 hours of continuing professional education in government financial management topics or related technical subjects every two years.

March 2012 was proclaimed CGFM month in 15 states and 37 local units of government, including 4 here in West Michigan.  More information on those proclamations can be found on the AGA’s website at http://www.agacgfm.org/CGFM-Certification/CGFM-Proclamations.aspx, or on our chapter website at http://www.agawestmichigan.org/home/cgfm.

The West Michigan Chapter of the AGA was formed in December 2009, and has offered around 40 hours of CPE opportunities to area government financial managers each year since that date.  We are very excited about continuing our service to the governmental accounting community throughout the region.

This year, AGA chapters across the country are once again working to recognize this important designation and declare March 2013 “CGFM Month.”  I have included a draft copy of the Proclamation here.  If you have any questions or need additional information, please don’t hesitate to contact me.

Thanks,

Kristin
